Dr Liam Ryan
I'm a political and intellectual historian with a focus on nineteenth and twentieth-century Britain. I am especially interested in histories of class, political language, non-party activism, popular culture and religion.

My current book project examines the political culture of anti-socialism in early twentieth-century Britain. Under contract at Manchester University Press, Anti-Socialism in Britain, 1900-1940, provides the first systematic political and cultural history of British anti-socialism. This work is particularly informed by an interest in Britain’s relationship with Europe, the political significance of Christianity, and the role played by non-party organisations and popular fiction in creating a negative vision of socialism with broad cultural and ideological resonance. I have published widely in political history, the history of political thought, and labour history.
I am also working on a new project that examines the history of audit culture in late twentieth-century Britain.
